Upcoming Courses
The Renaissance in Rome
This ten week course will explore perhaps the most significant period in the history of Western Art, the Italian Renaissance. The focus will be on Rome, the city became an important centre for the arts with the best artists travelling from all over Italy and beyond to study Roman antiquities and obtain papal commissions. A competitive environment developed between artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael leading to the creation of some of the most incredible art works in the Western world. A particularly fascinating area of study will be to look at the various theories as to how and why the Christian church embraced the influence of the pagan past and encouraged the rebirth of the classical world. Important writers, thinkers and leaders will be discussed as well as an attempt to uncover the experiences of the regular citizen outside the Vatican including women and the poorer classes.

This course will provide an introduction to paintings produced by Irish artists at home and abroad from the middle of the 19th century up to the turn of the twentieth century. A fascinating time in the art world, this era say the influence of modern movements like Impressionism and the eventually break with hundreds of years of the academic tradition in the visual arts. Irish artist will be situated within this movement and the response in Ireland to these styles will be discussed. Another important aspect will be the examining of the notion of “Irishness” in these works including the place of Irish art in Ireland’s history and how it can be seen as a reflection of the changing social, political, religious and economic influences. There will also be a close look at the careers of some of the key figures in Irish art such as Nathaniel Hone the Younger, Sarah Purser, Walter Osbourne among many others.
